The story of this book begins in the early 1970s, a time when the boundaries between art, science, and engineering were blurring into what Marcolli called the "pedagogy of the project" . To hold a PDF version
Marcolli’s work treats any blank space—whether a canvas, a city square, or a product blueprint—as a dynamic "field" of energy. Shapes and lines do not sit passively on a surface. Instead, they interact with forces, tension, and weight.

Attilio Marcolli (1930-2010) was a Milanese architect, university professor, and a leading cultural figure in architecture, design, and visual arts. Active from the 1950s, his early experiences in prominent architectural studios like Zanuso and BBPR preceded his 1968 degree from the Politecnico di Milano, earned with a thesis advised by Ernesto Nathan Rogers. This intellectual environment shaped his approach, blending architecture with broader visual communication. Marcolli's career included membership in the "Arte oggi" group, professorship in Artistic Literature, and teaching at the DAMS in Bologna under Umberto Eco and in Design at the Politecnico di Milano. His 1968 experimental "Education to Vision" course at the Cantù Institute of Art directly inspired his seminal work, "Teoria del campo," published by Sansoni in two volumes (1971, 1978).
The book focuses on "educazione alla visione," training the eye to perceive spatial relationships and formal structures.
