In their debut short, Puss Gets the Boot (1940), the characters looked remarkably different from their modern incarnations. Tom was named Jasper, a scruffier, more realistic cat who moved on all fours. Jerry, unnamed in the short but referred to as Jinx by the creators, was rounder and more rodent-like.
