The narrative structure is unique: it begins with a voiceover from Trần Nữ Yên Khê (the director's wife and long-time artistic collaborator), reading the first lines of the book: "Mr. Arthur and Mrs. Julie Bourgeois had five daughters. Two of them died young. The other three, Hélène, Henriette, and Valentine, all made proper marriages. From these three daughters came eighteen grandchildren, forty-three great-grandchildren, one hundred and fifty-four people of the third generation from the grandchildren, and up to the present, there have been eighty people of the fourth generation from the grandchildren...".
